Recap: Harper Lecture 2017

Didn't make it to the Harper Lecture? Read about what you missed.

On Sunday, April 9, 2017, the University of Chicago Alumni Club of Atlanta hosted our annual Harper Lecture. Harper Lectures, named after the first president of the University of Chicago, William Rainey Harper, feature current UChicago professors sharing their research with a lay audience. These lectures are run by the Alumni Association, sponsored by local clubs, and held in cities all over the world.

Our speaker, Derek Neal, a professor in the Department of Economics and the Committee on Education, spoke on "The Prison Boom and Sentencing Policy." His research shows that mandatory sentencing at the state level is almost exclusively responsible for the growth in prison populations in the United States, something that also adversely affects the labor market. The talk was very well received, with an audience of over thirty alumni peppering the speaker with cogent questions during the Q&A.

Stay tuned for details about the 2018 Harper Lecture, to be announced later this year.
