Meet your new Alumni Club of Atlanta president

Introducing Alex Walsh, AB'08

Hi there! It’s nice to meet you. I’m excited to serve as president of the UChicago Alumni Club of Atlanta this year.

alexwalshheadshotWhenever I meet another U of C alum, I’m always so glad. A few months ago, I visited Denver with a dozen folks from my U of C a cappella group. That was this year’s version of our very own annual “reunion” event. Those folks are like family to me, and I can’t wait to see them again.

I’m betting you have relationships like those, too – classmates of yours from Chicago that have become lifelong friends. Maybe it’s a result of having studied together on the A-level of the Reg, or living together in Max or Pierce or BJ. Or maybe you were in an a cappella group too! (In which case, let me know!) In my experience, we are a population that skews higher on values and characteristics that I just love being around: curiosity, quirkiness, empathy, and even a healthy dose of skepticism (if not irreverence!). And that’s why I’ve signed up to lead as president of the University of Chicago Alumni Club of Atlanta. I love spending time with people like us, and I want to do what I can to create more opportunities for us to come together in this wonderful city.

I hope you’re planning on joining us for Phoenixfest this year, on Sept. 29 at Ormsby’s in West Midtown. I won’t be able to make it – I’m getting married that day! But I’m sure it will be a blast for those who are in attendance, including Nicole Baran, our events chair and the Alumni Club host for P-fest this year.

Nicole and I are working with other leaders from the U of C community to really focus on engagement this year. We want to give the hundreds of Atlanta-area Chicago alums at least one really great opportunity to come out and meet other like-minded folks. (Now accepting ideas for future events!) In that spirit, be on the lookout for something fun to do toward the end of October. (Nerdy costume contest, anyone?)

I’m really looking forward to meeting each of you in person, and to drumming up more excitement among Chicago alumni currently living in Atlanta. Go Maroons!
